Case Study - Savona Wetlands
Summer of 2008 Sandhill Environmental Services was contracted to perform restorative services to two wetland areas in non-compliance. After careful review of the sites with South Florida Water Management District and the owner’s ecological consultant, a strategy was formed to achieve the desired success criteria namely that these wetlands would be brought back into compliance with the district and function as designed. The challenges facing Sandhill’s team were numerous based on the existing conditions of both wetland areas. Sandhill’s scope of service included the 100% eradication of all category 1 & 2 FLEPPC list of Invasive Exotic Vegetation and Nuisance species, and a complete restorative native planting plan. One of the two sites was nearly a monoculture of Torpedo Grass-Panicum repens. This non-native grass is extremely difficult to control much less eradicate. Sandhill’s methodology of herbicide treatment, combined with mowing, and hand removal insured the desired results. Other factors that posed challenges included limited access to both sites due to existing homeowners property . At times there are fine lines between balancing the requirements of the governing agencies, and respecting the privacy and property rights of homeowners. Sandhill met with with the homeowners whose property lines bordered the two preserves to explain what was going to be done and address their concerns. At first we were met with skepticism that what we were there to do would beneficially impact not only their own property, but the native wildlife and functionality of the wetlands. As viewed in the before and after photos, our restorative efforts were able to bring both preserves into compliance with South Florida Water Management district, and the homeowners now have a restored native habitat.
